A New World Order in International Trade
By Chike Edmund Nwasike
Editor's comment: We have entered a new era of world trade where size and location are largely irrelevant to a company's ability to operate on a global basis. New technology makes the global marketplace open to everybody. The technology is a great leveller and, because of this, it opens up new opportunities.
There is a new world order coming in international trade via the latest evolution in e-commerce. It promises to produce unprecedented growth for small businesses throughout the globe. The impact on consumers will be beneficial as well. New Internet tools and technologies currently being introduced will level the world trade playing field, providing significant new opportunities and benefits to small companies.
For example, a small textile company in Manchester, England will be able to order goods from manufacturers in China and ship finished product to distributors for delivery to retail outlets in Des Moines, Iowa—USA, Buenos Aires, Argentina and other cities across continents. The Manchester company will partner with manufacturers and distributors throughout the world, penetrating markets previously beyond reach.
The Web-based partnerships forged by small businesses will command competitive and cost advantages such as order aggregation, combined shipments and back office fulfillment. There will be positive consequences, too, for consumers, and for middle class growth in emerging major producing countries, such as China and India, making them attractive markets for Western manufacturers.
In addition, real-time Web-based systems will enable small business partnerships to take advantage of just-in-time manufacturing and sourcing of products and strike deals with buyers and distributors – much sought after features of supply chain management. These systems will interface with third party facilitators such as banks, courier services and shippers. They also will permit access to auction markets, traditional store fronts and private electronic market places.
The small business global partnerships will benefit in the marketing arena as well. They will be able to use new e-commerce capabilities to collaborate on advertising, public relations and email campaigns that will be localized to meet cultural and national requirements of the various regions of the world. Again, the aggregation will produce significant financial savings. By the same token, the collaboration can produce customer surveys, coupon promotions and other sales lures tailored to the purchasing habits and criteria of communities in all parts of the globe at negligible costs.
To ensure universal access to these Web-based opportunities and facilitate the global e-commerce trading process, small business partners can adopt an international UN-sponsored document standard called ebXML (electronic business using eXtensible markup language). The power and utility of ebXML is well supported by UN standards for electronic business collaboration.
As described on its Web site, “ebXML is a modular suite of specifications that enables enterprises of any size and in any geographical location to conduct business over the Internet. Using ebXML, companies have a standard method to exchange business messages, conduct trading relationships, communicate data in common terms and define and register business processes.”
The merging of Web-based systems and software and their multiple offerings with the power of private and public marketplaces not only will be fueling exploding new world trade partnerships and opportunities for small businesses. It will challenge the power of nations to retain absolute control over trade.
The Internet is the perfect medium to power a new era in global partnerships in this fast shrinking and changing world. The future will belong to those who can adequately harness these new capabilities and technologies.
Karl Marx’s sentiment about workers of the world uniting was only half right. In this new age of e-commerce it will be businesses and entrepreneurs who unite.

7/18/2002 Novantus' Web-based technology lauded.
Novantus' Web-based technology lauded
Westlake Village company's developments can save its users a ton of time and money. By Roger Harris, harris@insidevc.com Ventura Star
July 18, 2002
Just a few months ago, when the Riverside County Office of Education hired someone, the new employee would be given a stack of paperwork about two inches thick to fill out.
It's a completely different story today.
With the help of technology developed by Novantus Corp. in Westlake Village, the paperwork has all but disappeared and the time it takes to process the forms has been slashed dramatically, saving the district money and freeing workers in the Employee Services Division to work on other projects.
"It was our first real venture into automating a process that had been entirely manual," said Robert Nunez, assistant superintendent of the Riverside schools. "It's working very well. The return on investment has far exceeded what we expected."
And the Employee Services Division's busiest month is still ahead. In August, Riverside schools' 1,000 employees re-enroll for insurance coverage and other employee benefits. It used to take three employees a month to update benefits data in the school district's computer system. Now, re-enrollment is virtually automatic with Novantus' iBenefits online data management tool, Nunez said.
"Novantus was able to automate and simplify the process," Nunez said.
Benefits administration is only one way Novantus' Web-based technology can save companies time and money, said Chike Nwasike, Novantus' chief executive officer. Novantus' technology also can provide companies with a secure Web-based system to manage customer data, track business leads and sales and manage a distribution system and supply chain.
The Novantus system also is capable of communicating with different databases and operating platforms, a helpful feature for companies with multiple platforms and multiple databases.
Members of the Southern California Network Group, an association of companies and sales representatives in the Southland, use the Novantus technology to stay in touch when they're on the road.
"I'm able to go online to track leads and referrals in real-time that other network members have posted," said Mark Caldwell, a Rialto-based member of the networking group. "It saves me time and keeps me in touch with everybody else. It keeps me from missing out on business opportunities."
A company could invest in any number of business software programs, but that would mean installing and maintaining the software. With a Web-based system, there is no software to buy, install or maintain, Nwasike said.
Novantus faces stiff competition from major technology players such as business software developer PeopleSoft, which offers its own Web-based business management tools. Novantus may be the new kid on the block, but being smaller also means being able to respond quicker to individual customers needs, said Novantus marketing director Richard Jamison.
Any business that needs to manage information and stay in touch with customers, suppliers and employees is a potential Novantus customer, said Nwasike, who spent 20 years developing software systems for banks and Fortune 500 companies before founding Novantus two years ago.
It was while developing software systems for large companies such as Bank of America, IBM, US Bancorp and Blue Cross that Nwasike saw a potential market for Web-based business management tools for small- to medium-size companies.
Because its system is Web-based and there is no software for customers to buy, most small- and medium-size businesses can afford the Novantus system. Price was a major consideration in the Riverside school district's decision to go with Novantus, Nunez said.
Riverside schools have spent about $45,000 on Novantus technology.
"We're ready to identify other projects we can use the technology on," Nunez said.
Other human resource functions, teacher certification and risk management and other administrative services could be handled with an automated Web-based system, he said.
"We can customize the system to whatever the customer wants" Jamison said.

(BW)(CA-NOVANTUS-CORP) Riverside County Office of Education Goes ``Live'' With Web-Native Technology From Novantus Corporation
Business Editors
RIVERSIDE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 22, 2002--The RCOE (Riverside County Office of Education) today announced the implementation and fulfillment of a real-time web-native platform for their Employee Services Division from Novantus Corporation, a leading provider of custom and off the shelf Business Intelligent Software, utilizing true zero code applications.
"Our Open Enrollment for employee health and welfare benefits begins August 15th and we needed to have a fully functional program in place within that time frame," said Bob Nunez, Assist. Superintendent for RCOE. "Given our unique specifications, we were quoted 3 to 6 month delivery from other solution providers. Novantus developed and implemented their applications in less than six weeks and delivered more functionality and security with their web-native technology than we anticipated. The ROI this application provides in time management and manpower savings has already impacted our organization. We are looking to expand our relationship with Novantus and implement more of their technology with RCOE." "We were able to create a fully functional system based on our unique proprietary Novantus application framework (Novantus Umbrella) which enable us to implement complex enterprise solutions in very short order and at a significant ROI for our customers," said Chike Nwasike, CEO of Westlake, CA based Novantus Corporation. "Indeed, RCOE employees can now select their benefits plans from any computer that has internet access, they can update their records, record life change events, etc. RCOE administrators will also avoid the costly and time consuming paper chase that occurs at enrollment season." The Novantus system interfaces with Plan Carriers and generates transactions that will feed into their system in any format - XML, ASCII, mainframe EBCIDIC or any other format.
